  8. Khmer the predominant ethnic group in Cambodia, is also the name of the
  9. Cambodian language.  The Khmer people have inhabited the region for several
  10. thousand years.  Their language is related to Vietnamese and resembles
  11. numerous languages spoken by minority groups in Vie65t Nam, Laos, Thailand,
  12. Burma, and Malaysia.  The writing systems of the Khmer are derived from
  13. southern Indian scripts.  It was modified by the Thai for their own use.  In
  14. the seventh century, the Khmer of Chenla overthrew the Phu1 Nam overlordship
  15. and divided the area into Land Chenla, situated in the middle of the Mekong
  16. Valley, and Water Chenla, covering Cambodia and the Mekong Delta of South
  17. Vie65t Nam.

  20. height it controlled the territories of present-day Burma, Thailand, Laos,
