Khmer the predominant ethnic group in Cambodia, is also the name of the
Cambodian language. The Khmer people have inhabited the region for several
thousand years. Their language is related to Vietnamese and resembles
numerous languages spoken by minority groups in Vie65t Nam, Laos, Thailand,
Burma, and Malaysia. The writing systems of the Khmer are derived from
southern Indian scripts. It was modified by the Thai for their own use. In
the seventh century, the Khmer of Chenla overthrew the Phu1 Nam overlordship
and divided the area into Land Chenla, situated in the middle of the Mekong
Valley, and Water Chenla, covering Cambodia and the Mekong Delta of South
Vie65t Nam.
In the ninth century the kingdom of Angkor united the Khmer people. At its
height it controlled the territories of present-day Burma, Thailand, Laos,
Vie65t Nam, and the Malay peninsula.
